The Provincial Governments of Papua and West Papua are quite swift and successful in dealing with Covid-19. In the first week of June, R-nought in Papua was still perched at 1.12, with the number of cases of infection number 12 from 34 provinces. However, on the second weekend, this condition improved. The addition of Covid-19 cases shrank to dozens, even on June 15 resulting zero cases. The effective reproduction of disease (R-nought or Rt) is already below 1 or around 1.
In West Papua the Rt has subsided below 1, which is 0.97 since early June. The number of positive cases of Covid-19 in West Papua is 209 with 87 patients recovering (42 percent) and death of 3 people (1.5 percent). As of June 15 there were 209 cases of infection, number 23 from 34 provinces. However, in the second week of June, the rate of addition per day can be counted on the fingers.
So far, the two provinces are considered successful in preventing Covid-19 from causing a greater disaster. The notion that the two provinces are lagging behind in health facilities and medical personnel for the response to the pandemic is disproved by the fact that the death toll there is relatively small compared to many other regions in the country.
Papua Province is now able to carry out massive and aggressive tracing and testing. A month after the first patient appeared, the PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) machine was present in Jayapura, controlled by the Regional Health Lab (Labkesda) as an organ of the Provincial Government and Litbangkes as representatives of the central agency. The Covid-19 National Task Force also sent Molecular Rapid Test tools, reagents and cartridges to the interior.
From the trends that emerge until mid-June in Papua province, it seems that Papuans have hope that they will be able to move into the transition to a new normal situation in a safer situation. Rt has decreased, transmission has sloped. One achievement that can be presented from the Province of Papua is its ability to reduce the death rate of Covid-19.
Although the Coronavirus threat began to shrink, the West Papua Provincial Government did not want to take risks. PCR machines have been imported and are operating in the capital city of Manokwari province. In fact, there are two other sets already on the way, to later be installed in the Bintuni Bay Regency and Sorong City. West Papua’s local government officials realize, this pandemic is difficult to predict. So, two sets of PCR were held in anticipation.
With the existence of these two new PCR machines, now West Papua Province has an examination capacity of around 200 swab specimens per day. Technicians and analysts have also been sent to train in Makassar. Better to have an umbrella before it rains. They want to better protect the people regardless of their origin, religion, ethnicity or political choices.
