Papua Climatology Agency: appealed to people in Jayapura to be aware of landslides

Jayapura (ANTARA) – The Climatology and Geophysics Meteorological Agency (BBMKG) region V Jayapura, Papua urges people in their area who live on hillsides, cliffs and river banks to be more vigilant during this wet dry season.

Region V Jayapura Papua Climatology Agency Head, Petrus Demon Sili told Antara in Jayapura on Monday, said the wet dry season meant there were still opportunities for rain.

“This wet dry season usually occurs in July to August 2020 where the threat of the hydrometerology disaster does exist,” he said.

According to Petrus, in recent days in Jayapura there has been rain with relatively high intensity, so that the community especially at night must be more vigilant.

“In addition to slopes, cliffs and riverbanks, areas that have potential or frequent (regular) floods must also be vigilant,” he said.

He explained that in addition to being alert to the hydrometeorological disaster, the community also needed to be aware of the potential for a small earthquake because the Jayapura and surrounding areas were hilly.

“The reason is, triggered by a small earthquake with a magnitude of five on the ritcher scale, plus high-intensity rain, which is one to two hours without stopping, landslides can occur,” he said.

He added, his party had coordinated with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and other relevant agencies to deliver early warnings issued by BBMKG so that the disaster could be anticipated properly.
