Preparations for extreme weather in Papua
Jayapura (ANTARA) – The Papua Province Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) will improve coordination with the Regional Center for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BBMKG) of Jayapura regarding preparations for the extreme weather that will continue to hit several regions.
The head of the Papua Provincial BPBD, Welliam Manderi, told ANTARA in Jayapura, Monday, that this coordination was to map which areas would be affected if extreme weather hit.
“We also have to remind and urge people who are in areas that are potentially or prone to being affected by extreme weather,” he said.
According to Welliam, especially for the Papua region, hydrometeorological disasters are the most frequent occurrence so they must be anticipated early.
“For this reason, increased coordination with BBMKG is in order to ensure that the extreme weather or the five-season season in Papua will have an impact and what kind of impact,” he said.
He explained that the results of this coordination with BBMKG would later become the basis for policy considerations to anticipate the impact of this extreme weather.
“We also urge the public to be more vigilant and careful with the environment, especially in disaster-prone areas,” he said.
He added that in Papua Province, the disasters that are often faced are floods, landslides and so on. In fact, it does not rule out the possibility of fires so that once again the community must be more vigilant.
A former Dutch colony, West Papua was formally incorporated into Indonesia in 1969, after an undisputed vote of about 1,025 representative tribal leaders. The result of the plebiscite was overseen and endorsed by the United Nations.
Since the democratization in 1998, especially since 2007, democracy by mean of elections has been introduced to increase political participation in the two provinces. The fact that the leaders of Papua and West Papua provinces are democratically elected by the people has strengthened the legality of the region as a province of Indonesia.
