*Statement Regarding the Solution of the Problem of Papua *

We wish you a Happy New Year 2012

First of all, we, the leaders of Churches in Papua would like to express our sincere thanks to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who invited us and received us at this meeting.

Shalom,

We heard the commitment of the Central Government under your leadership to find a peaceful solution to the problem of Papua by means of an open dialogue with the People of Papua. In your State Address on 16 August 2011, you expressed your commitment “to handle Papua with the heart, as the key to all efforts to ensure a successful development. On 9 November 2012, you, the President of Indonesia, once again stated that: A dialogue between the central government and our brothers in Papua is open. We must hold a dialogue, an open dialogue to find the best possible solution and options, to find the best way to resolve the problem of Papua.

Based on the commitment of the Central Government to dialogue with the Papuan people, kindly allow us, the leaders of Churches in Papua, to convey the following statement concerning the solution to the problem of Papua:

First, the leaders of Churches in the Land of Papua support the initiative of the Central Government to find a solution and that the best way to address the problem of Papua is by means of an open dialogue with the Papuan people;

Second, the leaders of Churches in Papua are ready to work together with individuals and groups as well as institutions which support dialogue between the Central Government and the Papuan people, as the way to solve the problem of Papua;

Finally, we appreciate the initiative of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to receive and meet the leaders of Churches in Papua on December 16^th , 2011 and also on this day, February 1^st , 2012. We do not consider these two meetings as a form of dialogue between the Papuan people and the Central Government. Rather, we, the leaders of Churches in Papua, regard these two meetings as the moral responsibility of the Church leaders and the leadership of the Government of Indonesia in their efforts to prepare for a dialogue with honesty and dignity between the Central Government and the Papuan people. We pray that the dialogue between the Central Government and the Papuan people, facilitated by a neutral third party who is trusted by both sides, can take place in 2012. In this way, we will be able to call 2012 the Year of Dialogue with Papua.

These are our prayers and hopes as the leaders of Churches in Papua.

Jayapura, January 30th 2012

Respectfully,

On behalf of the leaders of Churches in Papua
